‘Constantine’ is based on the D.C./Vertigo title ‘Hellblazer’, which is excellent. Rather than compare the two, I’ll just rate it as a movie: John Constantine, who has managed to get himself locked out of Heaven and is so wanted by Hell that Kucifer himself refers to Constantine as the only soul he’d come up personally to get. You had to have done some serious wrongs to the devil in order to get that sort of attention. But the movie itself is pretty straightfoward - stop the devil’s son from being born on Earth, or we’ll all suffer for it. It’s in the details that this film is a little different than the rest. It’s got some new mythologies we haven’t heard before, some new tricks and some pretty cool villians (not all of whom are from Hell or Earth). As an added bonus you manage to feel something even for the ancillary characters, which is a fun bonus. Very nice F/X, especially Hell. Most of the acting is pretty goo, especially the character of Gabriel. Keanu is fine, even if he isn’t British.

It’s worth the admission.

Dreadfully flawed and with a muddled story line, “Constantine” is nevertheless worth watching, for its occasional profound and intense beauty, and its visions of hell and its denizens, which anyone who believes that forces of evil exist and influence our world will find fascinating. Loosely based on characters from the Hellblazer comics, the script is very interesting in parts, but the audio is abysmal. The dialog sounds as if it is coming from an underwater tunnel, and I had to watch the film with subtitles. Also, this is a film that begs to be seen several times, to make some sense of the muddle.

The cast is excellent, and I have always been partial to Keanu Reeves, who as John Constantine, a man dying of lung cancer, who can see, and has walked beyond this dimension, is very good in his own peculiar way. I can’t imagine anyone else of his generation playing the part. As he says of the cat in the film, he’s “half in, half out,” and Reeves also has that quality, of being in the world, but not quite of it. Rachel Weisz, who teamed with Reeves in the far less interesting 1996 “Chain Reaction,” is both Angela, a Los Angeles detective, and her twin sister Isabel. She looks gorgeous, and gives a sensitive, lovely performance. Others in the cast that stand out are Tilda Swinton as Gabriel, and Shia LaBeouf, as Chas, Constantine’s eager apprentice.

This is the feature directorial debut of Francis Lawrence, who has previously done music videos, and he certainly has an eye for bizarre imagery. The cinematography by Philippe Rousselot is terrific, and much of what is worthwhile in this film is due to him. It is hard to rate this film, as it is, like the battle of good and evil in the story, a mixture of opposites. Total running time is 121 minutes, it is rated R for “violence and demonic images,” but is comparatively mild in language and has no in-between the sheets action. The DVD extra is 18 minutes of deleted scenes.

Okay, okay, before I start getting e-mails up the waz detailing the differences between monkeys and apes, I know Clyde (the main character in the film owns an orange, male ape) wasn’t a monkey, but `Clint and his orangutan’ just didn’t have the same zing…Every Which Way But Loose (1978), directed by James Fargo, who, back in the mid to late 70’s seemed to have a promising career, working with Eastwood earlier in 1976’s The Enforcer, but after the predictable and hokey 1982 Chuck Norris martial arts actioneer Forced Vengeance, he soon found himself relegated to the domain of the small screen, directing episodes of such 80’s television shows as The A-Team, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, and Hunter. Starring in the film is Clint Eastwood (Unforgiven), one time Eastwood co-habitator (that means they shacked up together, but never got hitched) Sondra Locke (The Outlaw Josey Wales, The Gauntlet), Geoffrey Lewis (Salem’s Lot, Bronco Billy), and one of the more curmudgeonly actresses I’ve ever seen in Ruth Gordon (Rosemary’s Baby, Harold and Maude). Also appearing is Beverly D’Angelo (National Lampoon’s Vacation), Bill McKinney (The Outlaw Josey Wales, The Gauntlet), and John Quade (Bad Company, High Plains Drifter) as Cholla, leader of the Black Widows, what has to be the most inept biker gang ever committed to celluloid…

Buy,Download, Or Stream Every Which Way but Loose! Click Here

Eastwood is Philo Beddoe, a truck driver who earns a little extra income as a bare-knuckled fighter in what appear to be unsanctioned street fights, with his friend Orville Boggs (Lewis), a tow truck driver as his sort of manager (well, not really manager, but Orville researches the opponents and makes the bets). Philo, along with his pet orangutan Clyde, and Orville live with Ma Boggs, a cantankerous old biddy who’s constantly complaining about how Clyde defecates all over the place, and constantly steals her Oreos. Anyway, life seems to be going alright, that is until Philo falls for a country singer named Lynn Halsey-Taylor (Locke). After making the bumpity bump between the sheets and accepting a good deal of money from Philo (there is a name for women like that, but she did give Philo a rather convincing sob story), Lynn mysteriously up and leaves without so much as a how do you do, headed back to Denver…which prompts Philo to pick up and take after her, with Orville and Clyde in tow. Along the way they make a few enemies in a couple of cops who carry a grudge way to far (just let it go boys, you’ll live longer) and also in a particularly lame biker group calling themselves the Black Widows, led by their portly leader Cholla (John Quade), both groups in pursuit of Philo for what we in the business like to call payback (which also happens to be the name of a really good Mel Gibson film based on a Donald Westlake book). Philo does finally find Lynn, the cops and the bikers find Philo, and Philo finds himself with the opportunity to face off against the legendary street fighter Tank Murdock, supposedly the best there is…

The production notes state that when this script was originally presented to Eastwood, it was done so in the hopes that he would pass it along to Burt Reynolds…but Eastwood, who was looking for way to break from the western genre that launched him into stardom, liked it so much he decided he wanted the role himself. Also, many around him at the time, especially the studio executives at Warner Brothers, tried to dissuade him from making the film as they didn’t think it would fly, but, after the film’s release it ended up being the top grossing film of Eastwood’s career, so successful it spawned a popular sequel…I often wonder how many wonderful films got quashed by know nothing studio execs because the script didn’t have the juice of someone like Eastwood behind them…anyway, this film is just a good time, and doesn’t tend to take itself too seriously. Eastwood carries the movie, with his laid back machismo, but he did have a bit of competition in the ape and Ruth Gordon who tend to steal most of the scenes they’re in (probably my favorite scene is when Ma’s home alone, confronted by the biker gang searching for Philo, and is forced to use her shotgun which I think is similar to what someone might use to hunt elephants). Also, I know many people would probably like to credit individuals from `da hood’ with starting the whole wearing your baseball cap crooked fad, but I contend it was actually Geoffrey Lewis’ character Orville that made it popular. Locke did well, but I always felt she exuded an inherently creepy quality (check out the confrontation scene between her character and Philo near the end), no matter what film I saw her in (she appeared in like seven of Eastwood’s films, that is until the relationship took the last train to splitsville), and here is no different. Maybe it’s her excessively large eyeballs, or her borderline albino condition…and I really can’t review this film without mentioning the soundtrack. Normally, I don’t listen to country and western music, but I really did enjoy its’ usage in here, featuring performers like Eddie Rabbitt, Mel Tillis, and Charlie Rich…also Locke performs one or two number surprisingly well…and the memorable theme used for the Black Widow gang…I found myself humming along every time they made their appearance in the film.

The wide screen (1.85:1) picture looks very good on this DVD, and the Dolby Digital 5.1 sound comes through reasonably clear. Special features include a theatrical trailer for the film, production notes, and a filmography for Eastwood. I would’ve liked to seen a cast commentary included, as I think everyone had a great time making the film, and probably could have shared some wonderful anecdotes, but whatever…this film was followed by the equally popular sequel Any Which Way You Can (1980).

Cookieman108

Wow, do you mean to say that Hollywood actually made a movie that was not condescending towards working class America? Oh, that’s right, this one came out 27 years ago. Watching it for the first time since boyhood made me painfully aware of just how much our culture has changed for the worse. Nowadays, presenting a character like Philo Beddoe would necessitate the inclusion of some sort of Jerry Springer incest plot just to make it believable. Yet Eastwood’s Philo is anything but the kind of immoral dullard we are so used to seeing shout onstage at his half-sister paramour; in fact, his morality is exceptional given the circumstances. His honor is can be easily juxtaposed with Sandra Locke’s “hustler” mentality. Their romance is an incredible beating, but Philo takes the pain with the same grace that he does in the unofficial underground ring. My favorite part of the film is when Eastwood approaches a college girl in a country bar to say hello. She is nasty in return and looks down her irritable nose at him. The only reason she’s even at the tavern is to study primitives like Philo, and then report her findings back to the civilized world. His response is in keeping with what all of us would like to say after being friendly to someone who’s above that sort of thing, “What are you mad about?” I’m sure she could not even tell him even if she wanted to.

On the whole, Every Which Way But Loose, is a campy timecapsule harkening back to days when we could still laugh at what was funny, and love for reasons that aren’t reasons at all. If you ask me, this one has all the intangibles of a successful movie: strong men, feminine women, motorcycle gangs, old ladies packing curses and shotguns along with an amorous orangutan who is a better mate than Sandra Locke. Yes, this one is worth every Olympia beer and pick-up truck you see onscreen.

Ouch. I should have read the reviews before forking over the dough. I had no choice, really - the kids found it at the grocery store check-out. The kids liked it - they didn’t notice that the animation was no better than 1960’s Hanna-Barberra cartoons and that the story was 3 stories awkwardly stitched together. If you liked the moral theme of Atlantis, don’t ruin it with this dumbed-down cartoony follow-up. The orignal Atlantis was a visually stunning masterpiece of animation almost in the league of The Lion King and Fantasia. This DVD is not nearly worthy of the Disney name …

Considering that this “movie” is actually a combination of three stories originally produced for an “Atlantis” cartoon that never came to fruition, I find it to be unfair to judge these adventures as one whole. Instead, I’ll give a brief review of each of the three adventures and then summarize the entire movie.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Atlantis - Milo’s Return! Click Here

First off, we have Milo, Kida and the gang tackling the mighty Kraken. No, it isn’t the Kraken you may remember from “Clash Of The Titans,” but a sea-dwelling demon who wreaks havoc in the seas and possesses a small village. The story is probably the best of the three. It is quickly paced and has pretty good development.

The second story is rather boring. It takes place in the American Southwest. A band of “dust coyote spirits” have attacked one of the locals who happens to have found some ancient pottery. Milo’s team has to figure out why the “coyotes” are attacking the locals and put a stop to them. The ending of the tale is rather brilliant, but not enough to save this chapter of the entire film.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Atlantis - Milo’s Return! Click Here

The final story nods its hat toward Norse mythology. It features a man wanting to destroy the current world and rule over a newer, better one. Of course, he can’t do this as a mere mortal, so he uses a spear that is magically inclined and becomes “Odin.” If you know anything about Norse mythology, you know that Odin is similar to Zeus, only he rules the cold north. Once again, Milo and his crew have to save the day.

So what ties all of these little adventures together? Atlantis, of course. Using a mythology that ties just about every culture together, we find through these three tales that Atlantis is the center of the cultural universe. In other words, all gods come from Atlantis, and their powers are all knowing and all caring when placed into the hands of the right individuals. It looks like Kida and Milo and his team are the folks intended to control all of this power.

These tales aren’t as horrible as others have stated. They just have to be looked at as individual stories and I’m sure you’ll get more enjoyment out of them. If you have young sons in your family, they’ll probably get the most enjoyment out of this movie. Much like its predecessor, it relies on mythology and technology to move the story along. Those are two things that keep small children(8 and under)from getting to interested in this movie.

In all honesty, I’d rent this before buying it. If your kids enjoy it, then you may consider investing in it.

In 1999, when George Lucas was preparing to release The Phantom Menace, 60 Minutes aired an hour-long episode devoted entirely to Lucas and his new movie. In 2005, as Lucas prepared to release Revenge of the Sith, 60 Minutes followed up on their 1999 piece with a fifteen minute segment on the new film, with a few updates about Lucas’ life. This disc listed here is that follow-up, fifteen minute segment.

It’s nice to watch and to have on DVD, but the first hour-long episode from 1999 was much more enjoyable. If someone has that on DVD let me know! The disc in this listing contains ONLY the Star Wars segment from 2005. A few new, short interview pieces and scenes from Revenge of the Sith. If you taped it when it first aired, you should be fine. But if you must have everything, well, it IS an exclusively Star Wars disc.

Also, caveat emptor! The artwork on the DVD box is NOT what is pictured on this listing. You will receive a GENERIC 60 Minutes box with the stop watch and the title laser-printed on. The blue graphic picturing Lucas and the Droids and the SW logo is only seen behind Leslie Stahl when she introduces the segment. So don’t think you’ll be getting a nifty new Star Wars DVD box to display.

Buy,Download, Or Stream 60 Minutes - The Last Star Wars! Click Here

So again, it’s not an hour-long, it’s only about 15 minutes. It’s the follow-up to the original hour-long 1999 Star Wars 60 Minutes episode. And you just get a generic box. Enjoy…

the last star wars movie was excellent, save for a little crappy romance dialogue. 60 mins doesn’t have to be just about iraq or world stories.

I strongly recommend! Originally released in 1960, the film returned to theatres 4 times in later years. This is absolutely one of the most fun family films the Walt Disney Studios ever made. There is truly something for everyone… comedy, action, adventure, drama, romance, and suspense. Even at 126 minutes in length, it does not feel too long. Starting in the aftermath of a shipwreck, the Swiss family rebuilds their life on an uncharted tropical island. They use the wealth of salvage in livestock, tools, guns, furniture, wood, and more to build a safe home in the trees, complete with running water and other conveniences. The mother and father begin an idealic exhistance with their 3 boys aged 9, 16, and 18. But one day the older boys decide to take a canoe and survey the rest of the island. They stumble across pirates that are attacking the crew of a ship, and rescue the captain’s daughter, bringing the wrath of the pirates on them since they are discovered.

Directed by Ken Annakin, the movie was filmed on location on the caribbean island of Tobago. While the production went way over budget for a total cost of $4 million, Walt did not get upset with his production team at the time since the film was looking to be success when he reviewed clips from the set. As it turned out, with subsequent theatre releases, television, and video airing, the film has turned out to be one of the top-grossing films from Disney.

The tropical scenery is spectacular as they filmed all over the island; waterfalls, forests, grass plains, flowers, beaches, cliffs, mountains, oceans, streams, and much more. Contributing a tremendous amount to the exotic locale of the movie are animals, pirates, ships, and a tree house to beat all tree houses ever made. Similar to the role the submarine “Nautilus” filled in the earlier film “20,000 Leagues Below the Sea”, the tree house becomes a star in it’s own right. The wonderful and inventive home designed by the castaways and from the ships salvage is incredible to behold.

Featuring a wonderful cast and crew assembled by Walt himself, Mr. Disney liked to stick with actors he knew could relate to a broad audience. Most of the actors in this film appeared in other Disney movies over the years, many times with other actors from this film. Hayley Mills (Pollyana, Parent Trap, That Darn Cat, Summer Magic, In Search of the Castaways, The Moon-Spinners), Dorothy McGuire (Old Yeller, Summer Magic), John Mills (Did not appear in other Disney movies, but was Hayley’s real life father), James MacArthur (Light in the Forest, Third Man on the Mountain, Kidnapped), Kevin Corcoran (A Tiger Walks, Savage Sam, Old Yeller, The Shaggy Dog, Bon Voyage, Babes in Toyland, Toby Tyler, Pollyanna), Tommy Kirk (Probably the most proficient of all with Savage Sam, Old Yeller, The Shaggy Dog, Moon Pilot, Bon Voayage, Son of Flubber, The Absent-Minded Professor, Misadventure of Merlin Jones, The Monkeys Uncle, Babes in Toyland), and Janet Munroe (Darby O’Gill and the Little People, Third Man on the Mountain). Most of these actors also appeared in movies for the Disney television series as well.

VAULT DISNEY DVD VERSION

The 2 disc DVD treatment that Disney gave this film is perfect, starting with great packaging and case. It is in Widescreen, the first widescreen release outside of theatres for the film in fact. And what a difference it makes in the beautiful location island vistas of the film. The film has been cleaned up and remastered to its original brilliance with lush colors, great image and depth, it just sparkles. The DVD transfer itself is very well done, a high quality job. The audio is very clean and crisp.

DVD EXTRAS

The extras on this DVD are what really make the best version released of this film, and they are not all listed here at Amazon or even on the packaging. You have to hunt them down and get creative with your remote. So let me help by telling you what to look for if you buy this… For starters they have the original cartoon that was released with the movie, “Sea Salts” allowing you to see this with the kids the way that it is meant to be seen. There is a 2 minute “1960 Disney Studio Album”, a montage of projects, attractions, shows, and films being made and released that year. There is an audio commentary as an alternate track that features comments from cast and crew.

Next we have 23 minutes from a vintage Walt Disney television “Wonderful World of Disney” episode titled “Escape to Paradise”, that show the making of the film behind the scenes. Up next is the original 1960 movie theatre trailers for the film, and the 1960 televison spots to advertise the film. Then there are “Storyboard to Scene Comparisons”; a seperate “Storyboard Gallery”; and a 2 minute “Production Gallery” of photo stills from behind the scenes at location. Another gallery is full of production stills; Next is “Biographies” on 8 principle actors; and then “Concept Art” on the films pre-production design work.

As if that’s not enough a featurette titled “Adventure in the Making” was made just for this set, and at 49:00 minutes long it is very complete and satisfying, with recent interviews of the original cast and crew. There is great behind the scenes original footage in this piece, and the folks regale us with funny stories of the filming days. Peter Elleshaw (matte artist), Ken Annakin (director), Danny Lee (special effects), and actors John Mills, Tommy Kirk, Kevin Corcoran are all here for modern interviews. ANOTHER short 4 minute featurette that was also made just for this set is “Swiss Family Treehouse”, narrated by Hayley Mills. It is the pre-opening footage and the actual Opening Ceremony of the “Swiss Family Robinson’s Tree House” attraction (now gone, replaced with Tarzans Tree House) at the Disneyland Park. Walt himself is there and it is evident he is really enjoying himself in this must-see footage.

Included on the set is a very nice 12 minute interview with James MacArthur, who appeared in this film and 3 others for Disney along with a TV movie. This features great video as well. There is a “Pirates” music video sing along featuring pirate themed clips from Disney films, TV shows, cartoons, and the theme park attraction “Pirates of the Caribbean”, all set to the Disney tune of “Yo Ho, Yo Ho, A Pirates Life For Me”. An unusual or unexpected extra is a featurette that has 20 minutes of excerpts from a 1940 non-Disney version of the story.

The dvd set has Audio Archives set to photos from the film, including 2 Interactive Sound Studios, 2 songs from the film, original 1960 radio spots. Another real treat is the complete LP soundtrack of the original “Storybook Album” of the movie released in 1960.

SUMMARY

I really enjoyed this DVD, and this film really got the best of treatment by Disney. They simply outdid themselves and I am one grateful viewer. I wish all the really good classic Disney films got at least some of this royal treatment. They have a reputation as the best studio about protecting their old source material, archives, etc, but they are not always generous in using it for their DVD’s so I can really appreciate the effort here by the decision makers. Thank you Disney for this compilation that really honors this gem of a film the way it should be!!!! My highest recommendation if you are considering buying this DVD.

The folks at Walt Disney Home Video have put together four excellent new “Vault Disney” releases that truly showcase DVD technology at its best. “Swiss Family Robinson,” one of Walt Disney’s best-loved live-action adventures, benefits immensely from DVD technology, especially the wide-screen presentation and THX restored picture and sound quality. The widescreen alone would have satisfied most fans, so the plethora of extras on the supplemental disc are truly special. I have never seen a DVD with so many extras presented in such a creative and easily accessible way. Thank you to everyone at Walt Disney Home Video for this wonderful DVD. Hopefully, more titles will follow in this series (like Third Man on the Mountain, Darby O’Gill and the Little People, The Moonspinners, and Summer Magic) and ALL Disney DVD’s will be released in their original theatrical ratios

THE INVISIBLE MAN- Claude Rains is awesome as the man whose invisibility serum slowly rots his brain. Hunted by police, he sets out to cure himself and get revenge on the man who betrayed him. Excellent stuff! Check out the running pair of pants scene! THE INVISIBLE MAN RETURNS- has Vincent Price as a man on death row, framed for a murder he did not commit. He gets some help in the form of the invisibilty serum and simply walks out of prison! Can he prove his innocense and find the real killer before te serum drives him mad? Great sequel! THE INVISIBLE WOMAN- This one is strictly for laughs. A scientist (John Barrymore) invents an invisibility machine with his assistant (Margaret “Wicked Witch Of The West” Hamilton). A young woman volunteers to be turned invisible and the slapstick begins. A gang of thugs wants the machine for obvious criminal reasons. The gang even includes a stooge (Shemp Howard)! Worth a look. THE INVISIBLE AGENT- Jon Hall is the title character, dropped behind enemy lines during WW II. Can he foil the nefarious plans of the nazis? Sir Cedrick Hardwicke is head of the gestapo and Peter Lorre is an evil japanese spy. Not bad at all! INVISIBLE MAN’S REVENGE- Jon Hall is back as the invisible man. This time out, cheated and betrayed by old “friends”, he seeks vengeance at all cost. He encounters a scientist (John Carradine) who has been turning animals invisible with his secret serum, and you can guess the result! Very good! This collection is yet another goldmine from universal’s creaky vaults! Add it to your monster list…

Between directing the original “Frankenstein” in 1931 and his masterpiece “Bride of Frankenstein” in 1935, James Whale put out a little gem called “The Invisible Man” in 1933. In some ways I rate “The Invisible Man” above “Frankenstein.” For one thing “The Invisible Man” has a great musical score which heightens the drama in many scenes and helps to speed the pace of the film. The original “Frankenstein” had no musical score (strange one was never added for re-release as it would have improved an already great film tremendously) as musical scores weren’t commonplace until a few years later. I also think that Whale had developed greatly as a director between 1931 and 1933. “Frankenstein” has many scenes that seem to be stagey and lack the finesse of Whale’s later films.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Invisible Man - The Legacy Collection! Click Here

In many ways “The Invisible Man” is Universal’s most horrific horror film of the 1930s. Dracula was a vampire who killed to sustain his own existence, Frankenstein’s Monster was a misunderstood and sympathetic creature who killed out of fear or anger, while The Invisible Man is a man driven mad by an illicit drug who kills out of shear pleasure. He commits mass murder during the film on a scale much greater than any other Universal picture. We also have to remember he is at his core a man not a monster.

Claude Rains gives a magnificent performance, in his US film debut, in the title role. Rains, who’s face was only seen on screen briefly at the end of the film, had a deep distinctive voice which was perfect for a role that was more about voice than body. This role was the start of a long and very successful film career for Rains who played costarring and supporting roles in classic films from the 1930s through the 1960s.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Invisible Man - The Legacy Collection! Click Here

Also in the cast are Henry Travers, Gloria Stuart and Una O’Connor. Travers was a talented character actor who may be most recognized to film fans as Clarence the inept angel in the holiday classic “It’s A Wonderful Life.” Stuart, who as a starlet in the 30s appeared in dozens of films before retiring from the screen, had a career resurrection in recent years when she was cast as “old Rose” in the mega-hit “Titanic.” O’Connor, supplying comic relief as a busybody inn keeper’s wife, played numerous supporting roles in Hollywood’s golden age including a the role of Minnie in Whale’s “Bride of Frankenstein.”

Of course, by 21st century standards “The Invisible Man” is antiquated. The special effects, undoubtedly cutting edge for their time, are not very impressive in the age of computer technology. Having said that, I must admit this film is still entertaining and exciting to watch. The performances, especially Claude Rains, still hold up and the direction by Whale remains spot on. If you sit back and imagine yourself as a moviegoer in the 1930s, having never seen special effects like this before, it’s easy to see how stunning this film must have been to audiences more than 70 years ago.

The $20 price tag is well worth it just to own “The Invisible Man” but in this Legacy Collection you also receive ALL of the Universal “Invisible” films (minus “Abbot & Costello Meet The Invisible Man”). It could be argued that “The Invisible Man Returns” and “The Invisible Man’s Revenge” are the only true sequels as they follow the adventures of Jack Griffin’s (Claude Rains’ character in the original) brother. “… Returns” is distinguished by Vincent Price in the title role. These two films are pleasant B-movie efforts by Universal and part of the second horror cycle of the 1940s. “The Invisible Woman” is more comedy than horror and features John Barrymore in the twilight of his career. “The Invisible Agent” was a wartime adventure featuring Universal’s top action hero of the 40s, Jon Hall, using invisibility to fight Nazis.

Having added The Invisible Man, The Mummy and The Creature to its series of Legacy Collections, I sincerely hope Universal continues with the balance of its horror titles of the 30s and 40s. I hope to see a release of the films that teamed Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi (”The Black Cat,” “The Raven,” “The Invisible Ray,” and “Black Friday”), a release of the Inner Sanctum series starring Lon Chaney and a set with all the one-off horror films (”Murders in the Rue Morgue,” the 1943 “Phantom of the Opera,” “Man-Made Monster,” “The Mad Ghoul,” etc.) of Universal’s Golden Age.

This entry in the “Animated Classics of Japanese Literature” series offers the two-part “The Harp of Burma,” based on the novel by Michio Takeyama, and “Season of the Sun,” from a story by Shintaro Ishihara. In keeping with Central Park Media’s attempts to package these DVDs somewhat thematically, “Harp” is set right at the end of World War II, while “Seasons” takes place ten years later and deals with young Japanese who are far more privileged than the prisoners of war in “Harp.”

“Harp of Burma” is one of the most moving stories in the entire series. At 48 minutes, it condenses the short novel on which it’s based (available in English), which was also made into a two-hour live-action film, Kon Ichikawa’s THE BURMESE HARP (1956). Still, it maintains the structure of the novel and touches the main points of the story, which centers on a squad of Japanese soldiers in Burma who surrender to British and Indian troops when they learn the war is over. The focus is on the fate of one of their number, Mizushima, who is sent on a mission to talk some holdouts into surrendering, only to disappear for a long stretch and turn up as a Buddhist monk who visits his comrades but refuses to talk to them. When we finally learn the story behind his transformation, it offers a sad and heartbreaking illustration of the irrevocable effects of war on a man’s psyche.

The character design is quite simple, with Mizushima the only character differentiated in any significant way, although this tactic actually works quite well. One important element of the story is the music and its power to communicate. Mizushima plays a Burmese harp both as a soldier and as a monk, and the Japanese soldiers sing together quite frequently (including a Japanese version of “Home, Sweet Home”). In fact, it is their singing when surrounded by British and Indian troops early in the story that prompts the British and Indians to sing in response, thereby encouraging a peaceful surrender rather than a last-ditch firefight.

“Season of the Sun” deals with a self-centered young boxer whose good looks and physique attract the romantic attention of a well-off single woman at a seaside resort during a summer vacation. Their dates include scenes of lovemaking and nudity that are quite surprising in a prestigious, literary TV series of this type. The affair starts to go sour when the cocky young man begins mistreating the woman, seemingly out of boredom. As it turns out, although these “modern” characters have considerably more freedom than the characters in earlier eras of Japanese history seen in other episodes of this series, they are ultimately no happier. The character design is stronger and more detailed than in any other episode of this series I’ve yet seen. The backgrounds are rendered in great detail as well.

This volume is certainly on a par with the other superior DVD entries in this series, “The Sound of Waves/Growing Up” and “Izu Dancer/Dancing Girl/Ghost Story” (both of which are also reviewed on this site). Noburo Ishiguro, better known for directing parts of “Space Battleship Yamato” and “Macross” (Robotech), directed all three of the episodes on this disc.

It’s true the animation in this series is basic, but the Japanese is wonderfully slow with good pauses between sentences making this a great series for studying Japanese language. It is also a wonderful way to learn about Japanese culture and literature.

Most students know about WWII through the eyes of the victims of Pearl Harbor or through the stories of the Rape of Nanking, but there noble Japanese soldiers as well. Japanese friends say the Harp of Burma is based on a real person. A Japanese soldier who is injured and lost in a fight and sees hundreds of his brother’s in arms lying on the battlefield. In the shinbutsu custom, proper burial is critical to the soul’s peace and so he feels compelled to take care of his brethren.

This story of dedication is heart-warming.

Most students become familiar with classic works of western literature, such as Shakespeare, Hemingway and Hawthorne, but rarely do we get a glance inside the great works of literature in other cultures.

This is powerful segment and the story transends the spartan animation. Well worth the time and money.

As much as my little girl loves Stanley and never tires of watching a Stanley dvd, she just was not interested in watching this movie version of Stanley. It takes a minute before the Stanley characters appears and it may seem like an altogether different show.

I have tried several times to get her interested, even advancing the movie to the character’s first appearance and still no go. I don’t know if anyone else have had the same experience, but thought I would share mine.

I have bought 2 of these cd’s. My grandson is autistic, and he just loves anything Stanley. Unfortunately Disney quit making the cartoons. I heard the creator died. I wish I could get hold of some of the TV shows, but there is no way I can contact Disney. All I know is that it is so cute. I bought the book and the two other movies. My grandson is 5 yrs old, but has loved Stanley for at least 2 years, and I play them over and over for him.

Alan Rudolph (& wife) have crafted a film of unusual intensity. They were given permission to film inside Lewisberg, the maximum security prison that seems to be the end of the line for serious criminals. These are men who seem to have no hope of rehabilitation, and the interviews are riveting, whether from inmates or guards. Indeed, the warden seems to have a definite idea of what works. Much has been said about abuse in the prisons, and this film somewhat dispels that myth. To appreciate the power of this film is to know the power of evil; I won’t blab away a lot, but I was totally absorbed in the material at hand. The Raymonds are to be commended for this Oscar-nominated effort. Extras on the DVD are fine and insightful.

Seeing Britt Ekland step off the subway and observe the sights of the Lower East Side as the picture slips from color to black & white in the opening scene is great to see again after many years is refreshing! I have to admit that this is one of my favorite films and William Friedkin’s zestful direction and Bert Lahr’s splendid appearance as Professor Spats is truly a great thing to see. Allthough the subject of the early days of striptease isn’t the best subject for families, this could work out to be a good family film (!!) and for people willing to find out what burlesque and vaudeville was actually like, this Norman Lear (”The Jeffersons”) production is a visual treat. This is funny, vibrant, and highly nostalgic! See it and I can guarantee that you’ll enjoy it. Take my word for it.

Jason Robardes shines as the well-meaning if manipulative comedian and Britt Ekland is slightly miscast as an innocent Amish girl. The story is however subsidiary to the beautifully created setting of a burlesque night club. The music in particular enhances the atmosphere as do the claustrophobic sets and authentic performances.
The film loses focus because of its length and the sheer number of stars. Sometimes it seems Elliot Gould is the star, sometimes, Robardes. But the nominal stars of the film are upstaged by both Norman Wisdom who throws everything into his performance, and the great Bert Lahr, more well-known as the cowardly lion from the Wizard Of Oz, who died during filming. This is not a deep film, but an affectionate (and reportedly accurate) portrait of a time gone by.
